X7621 R.{Sir Henry Royce} FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} SECRET E1/M29.1.29. Copy to BD.{Mr Berend} " BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} " HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} " EFC. SS.{S. Smith} STARTER MOTOR HOUSING. X.7621 Please find herewith blueprint of LeC. 2648. shewing a minor alteration it is proposed to make to the above to facilitate manufacture. The large facing and spigot on the lower half crankchamber which carry the starter motor have to be machined by means of a boring bar, and for the better support of this bar it is proposed to cast a 1.750" dia. gap in the rear main flange of the crank-case so that the bar can be carried through and supported each side of the cut. The gap would be closed by an extension on the clutch pit casting. This extension is made in the form of a conical flute forming part of the main clutch pit core and should add to the stiffness of the mounting of the starter motor in a direction where it would be beneficial. The extra fastening has to be in the form of a set screw to allow of the bottom half of crankcase being dropped when required. The original drawing is attached to BY's copy of this memo.
