To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to BJ. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X. 8060 E3/M30.4.27. PHANTOM VALVE ROCKER GEAR. We send herewith drg. LeC. 2411 shewing the Phantom valve gear modified to provide tappets above the valve. The object of this experiment is to test the effect on the valve seating noise of lifting the valve with an absolutely vertical motion. The tappets should be a close fit in their guides since they are not subjected to the heating effects under which the valve spindles have to work. In the design shewn the valve has been shortened by leaving out the gland and using a double valve spring. We think you would like to test this mechanism first on a std. Phantom, and for this purpose it will be necessary to pack up the rocker about .350 and make the valve gear cover taller to suit. The initial pieces may be made from castings for the purpose of experiment. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
