'33' REAR AXLE. X7350

We have had failures with the aluminium portion of the '33' rear axle. In some cases the failure has occurred on axles which have not been run on the road but have been run on the road wheel dynamometer and have run for half an hour on 1st. speed maximum torque.

The boxes have cracked through the arms which carry the ball race which is furthest away from the crown wheel. Distortion and cracks have also occurred in the pinion housing.

Fortunately, DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} was at Derby and modifications were put in hand - the improved aluminium box is now nearly ready for test. We expect to have it running tomorrow.
It is also proposed that one of these improved boxes will be fitted to 21-EX car.
