X6126 By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Pgt. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Pgt1/AD10.7.31. EXPERIMENTAL ARMATURES WITH VARIOUS SIZES OF SLOT. In connection with R's suggestion in R3/M24.6.31, that we should ascertain the effect of earlier saturation of the armature teeth by making three armatures giving enlarged slots in three stages, we think that the general specification of these armatures should be as follows :- The armatures to be of the 24 slot, 48 coil type and the limit to the widening and deepening of the slot to be the mechanical strength of the tooth at the root. All the armatures to be wound with untaped coils of 5 turns each, the gauge of wire alone to be increased as the slot permits. The details of the three armatures, we propose as follows :- (1) A new standard core to be milled, having small slots and wound with 18 SWG. wire. (2) A present standard armature, which is wound with 17 SWG. wire, to represent the next stage. (3) A late (N2 series LH{Mr Haworth}) 24 slot core, with the slots still further enlarged, if possible, to accommodate 16 SWG. wire. In the event of it being impossible to make the slot large enough to take the winding in 16 gauge wire, 17 gauge wire will have to be used and the coils packed up.
