Reprinted from The Motor February 22, 1927. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} / X3594 A NEW LUCAS DIRECTION INDICATOR. Simple and Ingenious Signal Giving Four Indications. THE increasing popularity of enclosed cars, and the use of open touring cars with the side screens permanently erected, is making a call for direction indicators. With one of these signalling systems fitted the driver can indicate to following traffic his intentions, when turning to the left or right, or stopping. Equally important is the fact that with such a device the driver can indicate to a policeman on point duty whether he is going straight on as well as if turning to the left or right; and already in several provincial cities it is compulsory for the driver to indicate to the policeman on point duty what are his intentions. Now Messrs. Joseph Lucas, Ltd., of Birmingham, have produced a signalling device of this character, and, like all the Lucas products, it is particularly well finished, while selling for a moderate price. This is to be known as the Witchway Direction Indicator, the price of the complete installation being 55s., this including a front and rear indicator, a four-way switch and the necessary cables. The accompanying illustrations give an idea of how this operates. When the switch, which springs back to the central position, is released, and moved to left or right, up or down, an illuminated arrow in each of the two indicators points left, right, or shows the word “On” (which means the intention to proceed in a forward direction), and “Stop.” In the “On” and “Stop” signals, the word “On” shows in the front disc only, and the word “Stop” in the rear disc only. The signals are quite unmistakably visible from any angle at the front and rear of the car by day or night. It is intended that the front disc shall be mounted on the radiator, special light clips being provided for the purpose; thus the mounting is more simple than fastening to a mudguard, which would necessitate a bracket. The rear disc is held by three bolts on the off-side rear wing, and it is equally easy to fit. As both the indicators are light in weight no other attachments are necessary. This interesting new accessory, to be seen at any of Lucas's depots, will shortly be on sale all over the country, while further particulars can be obtained from Joseph Lucas, Ltd., Birmingham.
