Flywheel and Clutch (Continued).

The clutch withdrawing mechanism was in good condition and the operating shaft worked freely and was well lubricated.

The flywheel was attached by rust slightly on that part not covered by the clutch and also in the vicinity of the centre-bolts. The 1st motion-shaft splines also showed traces of rust, but as they were well-covered with oil, no corrosion had taken place. There was a slight amount of grit present in the clutch-casing and the quantity of oil was average.

Apart from the rusty clutch-plate, the ventilated clutch-casing seems to have caused no harm to any of the parts affected.

Gearbox E.7.

Gearbox and Actuating Gear LOP.GB.518.

The gearbox had not been distorted in any way by the recent accident, in which the 3rd motion shaft was drawn approximately 3/4" out of the back of the box.

The actuating gear was in good condition.

1st and 3rd Motion Shaft LOP.GB.622.

As a result of the accident, GB.431, 2nd speed driven gear, had been driven hard-up against the ends of the splines of the 3rd motion shaft, pushing the sleeve G.55812 along the shaft and so shearing K.4841 taper pin. This had been repaired in France and little damage appears to have been done. The rear bearing for the 3rd motion shaft was very free in its housing, and had been turning.

2nd Motion Shaft LOP.GB.620.

The centre journal bearing GB.432 was very slack on the 2nd motion shaft, G.55798, and had been turning on it. The shaft was worn .005" at this point and there was a clearance of .0055" between the inner race of the bearing and the shaft.

Otherwise, all parts were in good condition.
