JC.15. -3- Contd. O.K. The box was generally good but the cycle stay spokes were corroded and three of the nuts for tightening these were lost, having worked loose. The spokes were covered with wood spacers and the sealing compound at the top having cracked allowed the acid to get down to them. The cells were loose in the box the compound having cracked badly allowing them to vibrate. In the case of the P & R the sealing compound was good, showing little sign of cracking, and the cycle stay spokes were also good and tight. Condition of Cells. P & R. {Sir Henry Royce} On withdrawing the elements from their containers the positive plates were broken due to being tight with swelling, the grids being very weak and easily broken, but the paste was quite intact and firm. The negative plates were mainly in good condition, but some had loosened some of their pellets and forced their way through the wood separators which had worn rather thin and consequently shorted through the perforations of the ebonite separators which showed no signs of wear. It was impossible to ascertain the amount of sediment which had collected owing to the broken pieces of positive plate in the bottom. Contd. | ||
