x.3751 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} c. to Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} c. to WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} EPL/F16.2.20. RE. 10,000 MILES TEST OF LATEST TYPE SPLIT ALUMINIUM PISTONS. Week end run on chassis 53-CW - 187 miles. Total run since pistons fitted - 6197 " Report:- Elusive knocks bad. The knocks are now noticeable when running on the road, and the engine is only definitely free from this knock when running at full throttle, low speeds, as demonstrated to you this morning. We are now returning the cylinders and pistons to you, as requested, to be tested on your bench test, and will hold up further running pending further instructions from you. It is proposed, however, as soon as you agree that the test of the above cylinders and pistons can be continued on your test bed, to change over on to this car the second set of the latest type split pistons and cylinders now running on 16-LW, which have so far done 1776 miles satisfactorily.
