E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} SpectreCodename for Phantom III Frame Side Members. Herewith is N. Sch. 3915, showing a straight length of the 7" box section frame side channel, for the purpose of testing its strength and rigidity in torsion. We understand that you will provide the end pieces necessary to hold it in the testing apparatus. The object of the test is to determine the behaviour under an alternating twisting load, with the axis through the centre of the section especially as regards the way the weld stands up, so as to decide upon the best form of weld. The one shown follows the Citroen practice, to be tried first. Electric welding is intended. There are two thicknesses of material shewn - the .104 should be tried first, as we wish to use as light a section as possible. Mild Steel is intended. We shall probably also want to know what are the weak points under a direct breaking torsion. It is intended that large holes should ultimately be put in the inner web and the effect of these determined. Exp II have six 6 h splines with 4" and holes at signs cts{C.
