Filing Copy 48250 To Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/BE7.8.29. PHANTOM RADIATORS We recommend that the following depot sheet should be circulated. "It has been proved that certain types of tap water attack aluminium and form aluminium hydroxide, a gelatinous substance which is liable to choke radiators. This aluminium hydroxide itself can be removed without difficulty by Kleanwell Solution. If it remains in the radiator for any length of time, however, the hydroxide appears to combine chemically with iron oxide from the cylinders when it becomes insoluble in Kleanwell, and therefore cannot be cleared easily. In consideration of this, we recommend that whenever a car having an aluminium head i.e. F2B Series onwards, comes into a depot, its radiator should be washed out with Kleanwell Solution, afterwards being thoroughly cleansed to ensure that no Kleanwell remains in the system. Obviously no car would require such treatment more often than once every six months. We recommend that soft water should be used for refilling the system of such cars."
