To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to MGT. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 84012 Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}5/E9.6.32 Referring to our conversation at Derby last week, we have now tried a Chrysler car fitted with the free wheel and vacuum operated clutch. I attach copy of PN{Mr Northey}'s note on the subject. My view is that the arrangement as provided on the Chrysler has quite a big appeal. Nevertheless for the majority of motorists I think the synchromesh is preferable. Personally I am not keen on the free wheel for two reasons, one because one loses the braking effect of the engine when decelerating, and secondly because after every slow-down one has to speed the engine up again, which, as PN{Mr Northey} says in his note, becomes rather an irritating feature.
