To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 8420 PHANTOM - LIGHTENED FRONT AXLE. FRONT BRAKES. The Test Dept. have been experiencing trouble with the present series of cars due to the steering taking charge on brake application. Although we do not know of any reason why the lightened type front axle should give us more efficient front braking, the fact remains that we are in trouble in this direction. We have taken a test case and find that by fitting 4" levers G.75413 on the front equalising shaft to reduce the front braking, we can eliminate the trouble. As R.{Sir Henry Royce} has already expressed a desire that the reduced front braking should be fitted to all cars, this would appear to be a simple means of overcoming the difficulty.
