SENIOR RANGE GEARBOX.

These are our views on the design queries raised in Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH.8/SW.2.4.41.

(1) Felt Seal.

Have we had trouble from the present method of sealing the gap between the crankcase and the clutch bottom cover.

We thought this functioned satisfactorily.

(2) Eccentric Pins.

We ought to get sufficient friction to lock these eccentric pins from the two ¾" studs.

Is it possible on limits for the cover plate to touch the gearbox without nipping the shoulder on the eccentric pin.

If the friction is not being lost this way, it may be due to the shoulder on the pin becoming sunk into the soft metal of the gearbox. A larger shoulder on the pin would reduce this effect and at the same time increase the radius at which the friction acts.

The size of shoulder can be materially increased without altering the gearbox or the profile of the cover plate.

(3) Damper Pump.

Without having any knowledge of this filter, we would say that if it is fine enough to keep back dirt and not so fine as to prevent the pump priming it should be satisfactory.
