F3/Av/JL15530. 15th May, 1930. Messrs. Saunders-Roe, Ltd., East Cowes, Isle-of-Wight. Dear Sirs, In reply to your DH {D. Henderson - Showroom} /GMP.13530 of the 13th May, we note in the second paragraph that you require the engines for use in Coastal Motor Boats, and not in aircraft as we had supposed. In view of this we desire to make the following remarks:- (1) We have no experience whatever of the Condor engine as the power plant for marine work. (2) Owing to the materials used in the construction of the engine it is absolutely essential that you should use a fresh water cooling system. (3) You will appreciate that aluminium is freely used throughout the engine and this requires consideration from the sea water corrosion point of view. (4) The only types of Condor engines that we have put into production are fitted with spur reduction gearing. Will this be satisfactory for your purpose? If the above points can be met, we consider that the Condor engine will give you reliable service, as presumably the full horse power would not be required except for comparatively short bursts, normal cruising being done considerably below full speed. We enclose for your information a copy of "The Aeroplane" for 30th April 1930, in which will be found on pages 791B, 793A, 793B and 794 an article which fully | ||
