20/25 Engine - Front Tie Rod.
--------------------

Thank you for your Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}8/KW10.2.36.

With regard to the slack front tie rods which we have been changing for the past few months, we are able to say, quite definitely, that to remove a slack tie rod and replace it with a tight fitting one, is a definite cure for jaggering clutches on rubber mounted engines.

You will perhaps recall that in October last, we were suffering from an epidemic of jaggering clutches, and just at that time, Messervy visited your Department to obtain information concerning the latest type carburettor. He took the opportunity of having a discussion with you on jaggering clutches, and you pointed out the necessity for a tight fitting front tie rod.

Further, at a later date, Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} called at Cricklewood. We discussed jaggering clutches with him, and he asked us, if ever we came across a case of jaggering clutch on a rubber mounted engine which could not be cured by supplying a tight fitting tie rod, to telephone him before we dismantled the clutch, so that he could send a representative to Cricklewood to go into the matter. Since then we have not come across a single case of jaggering clutch which could not be cured by the tie rod job.

Needless to say, we were very pleased to have this cure available, as it could be dealt with so quickly, and so much cheaper than when we used to dismantle the clutch.

With regard to the amount of slackness found in parts which have been changed, we are afraid we cannot give you this information. In all cases where a tie rod has been removed, it has been forwarded to Derby for attention, therefore no doubt Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} could give you the dimensions of the slackness which existed.

We are tomorrow forwarding to you three tie rods which have been removed this week, and I would particularly draw your attention to the one labelled GAF-72. You will see that this is slack at both ends and the jaggering was very pronounced. The introduction of a new tight fitting tie rod completely cured the trouble.

Our Quarterly Report for Quarter ending 31st December, which we sent to you early in January will give you all the
