Contd. -2- HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LGSD.9.21. ------------------ arrangements so that we can motor the engine round to enable us to find the cause and the best means of overcoming it. Gear Box Silence. We have made comparative tests and find that if we have a plain bearing in place of the Hyatt Bearing (roller), the box is appreciably quieter. We recommend that we fit a plain bearing in this position. We have now had a fair amount of experience with the running of Goshawk 11. compared with a 40/50. We have got over the novelty of it and are better able to judge its running. We feel certain that we shall never obtain the same comfort of riding and smoothness on the small car that we can obtain on the big car. We shall miss the gliding sensations which one gets on the big car. If one changes over from the Goshawk to a 40/50 H.P. Car, there is always a restful feeling on the 40/50. It does not appear to be due to any one particular feature, but due to the fact that it is a big car. We think, in making the 40/50 H.P. our standard, we may be too severe with our criticisms on the small car.* We would suggest that it might be advisable to look around and find what is the best small 6-cyl: car on the market equivalent to the Goshawk.* The cars we have in mind are - The Delage - we believe that they are making a car with six cylinders and operated by push rods. The Armstrong Siddeley. We certainly think it would be useful if FN. or some-body qualified to judge, to find what they considered is the best small 6-cylinder car which is likely to be a competitor with the Goshawk.
