Sr/VA3/ET.23.5.36, stating that 3 Bentley exhaust manifolds have cracked at a point below the top stud hole of the centre branch. These manifolds have only run approx. 7,000 miles. Although we have had very little experience of these manifolds cracking through road use, we do know that test bed work will crack them across the stud holes unless we keep them water cooled. This position now calls for design attention. Incidentally an examination of the Packard and Chevrolet manifolds shews them to be of a much more robust nature where they are bolted to the cylinder head.
