BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ) Copy to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} RECEIVED STAMP: 28 JUL 1931 BONNETS WITHOUT RIVETS. We had hoped that before now we should have had an opportunity of seeing a bonnet in thick aluminium without rivets, and fitted with flip flap shutters produced for P. 2. We anticipate that this is the scheme that we shall adopt, and provided such a bonnet is satisfactory we hope to see a similar bonnet with flip flap shutters on the 20/25. for 'U' series. So far we have no means of dealing with the louvred bonnet which we appear still to require on P. 2. for the continental touring saloon and other similar bodies. We understand that unless stiffeners are used right around the area including the louvres the metal tears at the end of the louvre. We would be glad if Derby would attempt to make such a side panel for a bonnet with the present louvres in the thick gauge aluminium, and in order to reduce the amount of stretching at the end of the louvre the opening may be more tapered off at the end. You have already told us that our present louvres are no worse in this respect than any other type you know of, and therefore we see no reason in making a change in type. We cannot go on with the present louvred bonnet covered with rivets after we have standardised a rivetless plain bonnet, and we wish you to do some experimental work in connection with the louvred bonnet so as to indicate to us a way whereby we can eliminate the rivets for the stiffeners.
