re ADAMANT ENG. CO. LTD.

STEERING CAMS.

I proceeded to the above company today and went over the problem of scrap with Comm.Matravers and Mr.Jackson Sales Manager.

The whole position was reviewed from the commencement of the job.

They set out to suggest we are somewhat responsible for what scrap has been made inasmuch we approved of the early samples as supplied to Mr.Hardy and production.

I flattened this argument by stating that this may be so, and we have alternately had reasonably good batches and batches of a very mixed standard, some useable others not useable and the reason for rejection varied (some cams are large in bore, some taper in bore, others damaged by trimming and polishing and the major quantity irregular contact effect on the essential portion of worm.)

There are approximately 250 cams rejected by us held at Adamant Works, and I took with me a new mandril that we have made to try if any of the cams can be recovered by re-grinding the journal diameters. I set up a cam correct to the worm and the journal showed .007" out of truth at one end and .006" out at the other end, this throws the bore for Steering Tube this amount out of its correct relation with journals when reground.

I am rather apprehensive of such a large error, because the points of eccentricity are at 180 degrees to each other on this cam and will cause the wheel end of tube to rotate approximately .175" out of truth, but to test the value and possibility of recovery of cams by this method I have instructed they grind six and send these along to us as quickly as possible.

To effect a satisfactory settlement to the question of meeting the cost of excessive scrap,
contd. over.
