X.3039 - Tensile Tests of Aluminium Alloys.

Mr. Hall should have a copy of anything in connection with the testing or experimenting with metals. I presume that he has a copy of these tests, but it does not say so on your sheet.

From my observations and the results, it appears that the question of the value of the metals would be largely influenced by their casting properties. Should Mr. Hall's metal have good casting properties, I think it would be worth while having a set of pistons made in this metal.

Regarding P.2, it would appear that this should give better results than P.1. It would also be assumed that this metal would cast more easily.

Regarding the iron found in these alloys, it is probable that this element is unavoidable owing to the present supply of aluminium containing a percentage of iron.

I shall be pleased to receive a further communication on this subject.

We have since been instructed by the R.A.F. to try piston alloy B.4. having 7% of copper, 1% zinc, 1% tin. Kindly substitute this for P.2 in the above, and make similar tests of it, especially Stanton and casting properties. It may be extremely urgent to get away from P.1, which does not seem entirely satisfactory.
