PHANTOM II

We have got 58-GN car at the Works in order to fit to it some of the latest P.II pieces so that we can confirm the results obtained on 19-EX.

You will remember that it was agreed we should fit one of the new carburetters to this car and afterwards we wrote and suggested that we should wait until we got one of the larger size. However, as this larger carburetter is not yet instructed we do not think we can wait for it and therefore propose fitting to 58-GN one of the new carburetters we have already made. The chief idea of fitting this carburetter to 58-GN is to see how it behaves under more or less Town conditions without expert care.

The other parts we shall fit to this car at the same time are exhaust system. On 19-EX we ran an exhaust system which had the following advantages :-

(1) Less cost owing to the elimination of Staybrite from the system.

(2) Reduced back pressure.

We have had no unfavourable comments as regards the silencer - it is a great improvement as regards reduction of booms, but we know that it definitely suffers from the external noise which is heard when the car is driven at full throttle between rows of houses. Therefore we wish Sales to be satisfied on this point. We attach a report of comparisons of this silencer with the standard silencer.

We also want to try and fit to this car a means of applying friction on the steering column. You will remember that we have recommended this for some time. We have now completed a scheme supplied by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and we consider that the results are sufficiently promising to fit a set to this car.

In order to get a correct test on the carburetter we shall also fit a head giving a 5 : 1 C.R. and new camshaft. These parts are necessary in order to be able to judge the carburetter as it will be used on production.
