RG.{Mr Rowledge} ) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ) (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) c.c. to BG. MOR. Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} c.c. to A.{Mr Adams} F.{Mr Friese} S. AERO ENGINES. R2/M2.5.32. Sent from W.W. 5. 5. 32. X3866. RECD XX TWO PIECE CYLINDER BLOCK. This seems to involve exactly the same features and problems as the J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. scheme. It was not expected that either of these were badly watercooled, my impression being that two piece was better than the original for detonations. I hear (with a definite fear) of more powerful studs and special slipping spanners (which are only to be used to indicate under-tightness) crushing the poor liner on to the semi-flexible crankchambers, whereas in our two piece (alternative) we have ample and extra studs to ensure a good joint, and good ordinary long studs to keep the block on to the crankchamber, which sounds more robust, requiring less care, skill, and special knowledge of our engine. I beg of you to make every endeavour to get away from our old scheme. Since writing the above I have received HE/RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}'s memo. on the experiments to improve the liner. This is exactly what was understood, but one is extremely pleased that such definite improvements have been found. It will be so useful for engines already built, and those we must build to the present standard scheme. It does not involve much change to the present engine. At the same time I still ask for every effort to be made to get what I think so much the better scheme going. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
