-5- Derby. We took the opportunity to examine the automatic lubrication of the clutch spigot. We found that this had operated satisfactorily, a good film of oil was on the spigot bearing. The condition of the friction plate and fabric was very good, there was no sign of the fabric having moved. GEAR BOX & ACTUATING GEAR TO L.O.P. G.78495 INCORPORATING N.S.2973 OILING OF CLUTCH SPIGOT BEARING, N.S. 3066/7 BACKING LIGHT SWITCH.- The gears have been very good for evenness of tone. There has been no difficulty in the engagement of any gear. The change speed mechanism is still slightly on the tight side. There are periods of vibration from the reverse plunger. We had, during the first portion of the test, a bad oil leak from the holes drilled for the plungers at the bottom of the change speed tower. These were stopped up and a breather made in the filler plug, as a fair amount of air pressure is built up in the box. A very slight leak of oil has come out of the breather hole. The other oil leaks from the box, is a fair amount from front and rear bearings of main driving shaft, also from the base of the backing light switch mounting, and where the ratchet is attached to the box for the hand brake. The backing light switch has operated successfully throughout the mileage. It has not been necessary to add any gear oil at this mileage. PEDALS TO L.O.P. F.80963. 'E' TYPE.- The position of the pedals and the operation of these have been satisfactory. (A reminder) A question of insufficient clearance for the foot operating the brake pedal was raised by Sir Henry whilst the car was at West WitteringHenry Royce's home town, the steering column bracket being too low. The lubrication and condition of bearings appear to be quite O.K. STEERING COLUMN & BOX TO L.O.P. F.80784. 'E' TYPE.- We have had a very bad oil leak from the pendulum lever bearing; the loss of oil from the steering box at this mileage being .500 of a pint. We cannot detect or feel any undue wear to have taken place in this bearing. The column and pendulum lever are O.K. The steering generally has been normal; joggles of the wheel vary according to the surface of the road, at times they have been severe. It has been selective throughout the mileage. No sign of wobbles at either low or high speeds. CROSS STEERING TUBE TO L.O.P. G.77482.- We located the tiring of the steering after a long run reported to the insufficient lubrication to the ballends of the cross steering tube. We dismantled the tube after a long run and found that the pads were short of oil, leaving them practically in a dry condition. We overcame this trouble by making small recesses in the bottom of the pads to act as reservoirs. | ||
