Extra Cylinder Lubrication when starting from cold.

These experiments were started owing to the several cases of piston seizure which have occurred on the Bentley. We have three lines of attack -

(1) Solid Aerolite instead of the R.R. Split skirt type pistons. Less wall pressure when starting from cold, now standardised.

(2) Anodic treatment of the piston. This forms a hard surface on the aluminium face. We have such pistons on test treated by ourselves, and also by other people, but they are not yet sufficiently developed to run 10,000 miles.

(3) Extra piston lubrication when starting up, which is the subject of the present report. 21-G-IV is so fitted and about to run 10,000 miles.
