RE: NITRIDING OF CRANKSHAFTS IN FRANCE.
(Chassis B.6.BN.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington})

Referring to the correspondence from Sr. which we return herewith, consisting of VA.3/ET.30.12.36. to yourself and copies of letters to and from Messrs. Aubert & Duval, we have had no recent correspondence with either Sr. or Aubert & Duval on the subject of nitriding, but years ago when we first interested ourselves in the question of nitriding steel I believe that you visited their Works and discussed the matter generally with them. In addition, they were written to from Derby.

Messrs. Aubert & Duval are the concessionaires for France for nitralloy steel, and it was at the time when we were considering the use of nitralloy that a certain amount of correspondence took place between Derby and Messrs. Aubert & Duval.

You will remember, however, that we abandoned the use of nitralloy steel in favour of V.C.M. to avoid certain disabilities which nitralloy exhibited viz. the steel itself which had to be alloyed with aluminium had a very dirty appearance on fracture, and furthermore it was necessary to lap off the very hard loose external surface which was produced during the nitriding operation. V.C.M. has neither of the above defects, and was adopted by us in preference to nitralloy. well

You are probably/aware of the above, but I am putting it on record as all I know of our relationship with Messrs. Aubert & Duval.
