+8430 [REDACTED STAMP] C. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BYS/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 7.9.25. ******************** STEERING. ********* Referring to RI/M.3.9.25. we thought we had made it clear that the larger box only fouled the frame if we attempted to use it to replace an existing steering column. We raised this issue because we thought it would probably be within the scope of your intentions to replace existing columns. The suggestion put forward at the time was that we should make a special bracket where the column is fixed to the dashboard, widening the bracket so that we would use two existing holes, plug the remaining two, and fit a larger bracket to enable the column to be moved .250" nearer to the centre of the chassis. This we understand is the agreed scheme if and when it is necessary to consider the changing of existing columns. In regard to the various proposals which have been put forward, the actual position is as follows:- 1. Improvements called for in memo RI/M.28.8.25. ***************************************** We have instructed up material for both "W" and "X" Series on the new proposal, and the Works are going slow on existing material, and at the same time working upon the production of the new parts to be ready to change over when the new proposal is standardized. With the scheme outlined in Rl/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 28.8.25. we should have to use a damped pendulum lever 10.5" long. In regard to the pitch of the worm, the Experimental Dept. are of the opinion that the .720 pitch of worm is the best of the two proposals, as it allows the steering to be a self-centreing under all conditions, whereas the .625 pitch does not. 2. Proposals detailed in Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}3/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 2.9.25. ************************************* With reference to the proposals detailed in Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}3/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 29.8.25. which we have produced and issued the modifications suggested by you as being suitable for immediate use on both the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I and the 20 HP. to the Experimental Dept, and have Con. | ||
