ORIGINAL Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/TAG.3/KT.4.2.31. X.2965. X.3992. F.M.S. 93. MAGNESIUM CRANKCASE. MECCANO HANGAR. USED FOR INSTALLATION TESTS. FAIREY REED PROPELLER. 2250 R.P.M. FULL THROTTLE The magnesium crankcase fitted on the above engine has cracked after running 49 hours on the Hangar. The previous running was 2 hours on the test bench making the total of 51 hours running. The crack starts mid-way between the holding down studs of the cylinder block (at No.1.A.cyl.) and extends down the crankcase for six inches, finishing near the flange for the reduction gear case studs. The engine will not be safe for full throttle work but can be used for the development of the slow running carburetter on top of the induction pipe until such time as there is another engine ready or if the crack extends further.
