RE NO.4 GOSHAWK.

SHOCK DAMPER JOINTS, ETC.

Naturally I could not understand leaving England for a long and rough continental run without protection for the steering and shock damper joints, and since the roads have been inundated with water, mud, and grit, one cannot wonder that the joints have worn very quickly.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} thinks that for the shock damper joints, those we made for the 40/50 with single adjustment the best design we have, i.e. there is one adjustment at the bottom for both ball joints, and one point to grease. I agree that these shall be tested on Goshawk. There is not the same reason for cramping the blocks as in the steering tubes, and hence these features are not necessary in the shock damper joints.

Agreed then for the first cars we use the shock damper joints which have been proved on the 40/50, and that we fit the best leather gaiters for these that can be found or made.

Agreed also to try one size larger ball in the cross steering tube with present type of joint i.e. easily adjustable and cramped block type.

The longitudinal tube should remain the present size and have set-up buffers at rear end only, but with the increased free movement arranged at Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.

It has occurred to me that we might try all the surfaces in steel, case hardened, the reason being that any
