RE AMMUNITION TRAY - PEDESTAL MOUNTING
40 mm. Gun Type BD.{Mr Berend}
-----------------------------

Attached to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH.'s copy of this memo is WPL.130 shewing the ammunition tray for the non-elevating or Pedestal Mounting. It is based on that for the Oerlikon Mounting WPL.113 already issued and fitted. Both schemes cater for a standard box of Naval Ammunition containing 30 rounds and weighing 130.5 lbs. made up as follows:-

30 rounds of ammunition = 85.5 lbs.
Regulation box = 45.0

It is proposed that Blk. should send a print of WPL.130 to the L.M. & S.R. and endeavour to get them to detail and produce the same.

It must be appreciated that during the visit to the Range at Eastney, we were requested to cater for a standard Naval box of ammunition on the tray. It was not considered acceptable to have loose live rounds on the tray.

We have heard since that the Power Boat Co. are interested in carrying 300 rounds per craft, ex boxes.

We suggest that the whole issue of ammunition and tray should be cleared up with the Naval Authorities during their visit next week, both for the Oerlikon and the non-elevating mounting. If it were to be accepted that say 15 rounds, ex box could be carried on the tray, the size of the tray could be reduced.

In the meantime we suggest we should go ahead with WPL.130 with all speed.
