RE. HUMPHREY SANDBURG CLUTCH.

With reference to CWB7/GM5.1.27.

In effect, this clutch is a free-wheel device. The effect of a free-wheel, on changing gear, is well known to us. Some of the early 4-cyl. 20 HP. RR. cars were fitted with a freewheel lay shaft which made it very much easier to change gear.

The late Chairman of the Company, Mr. Claremont, was a very keen advocate of this device. He had a 4-cyl. car fitted with it, and afterwards, when he purchased a 40/50 HP. Silver Ghost, he insisted that a similar device should be fitted to that car.

We ran experimental cars fitted with the device but it was considered that the disadvantage and extra complication did not merit its adoption.
