To EH. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to C.L. BN.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} EFC. ORIGINAL 2 R3/023/9/19. 1919 RE CHASSIS 49 GB. X.2681 RECEIVED With reference to the above chassis, the engine feeling harsh to turn by hand and during slow running is, no doubt, partly due to being refitted too tightly, but I also feared some rods were not in true alignment, because there are not many piston knocks when first starting up the engine cold, and also the pistons do not hold the gas really well, especially No.6. One can hear gas escaping into the crankchamber. Although extra oil is always on no trouble can be detected from over-oiling. Many small adjustments have improved this engine, and with the exception of vibration at 16/20 miles per hour, which I think is due to torque reaction, the car is giving much better account of itself. This particular vibration should be investigated as soon as possible. I hope you will find it can be cured by freeing the slipper flywheel, but I am doubtful. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
