-2- much apparently can be done by the correct adjustment of the levers, we are informed that such adjustment can only be done by highly expert people, and in any case, the trouble is not necessarily removed. Fresh materials are being sought for. We feel that unremitting efforts should be made in this case also. We are not aware that any adjustment in the same sense as was possible with the old 'Silver Ghost' clutch can be made. Latterly, we have had no cause to criticise clutches in respect of their stopping qualities; once the adjustment is correctly made, this appears satisfactory. We think possibly that when owners and drivers realise the advisability of double-clutching, upwards as well as down- wards, there will be less difficulty in their minds. EXHAUST. We are considerably encouraged in respect of the modification which has been effected here, although we are anxious to know from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} what is the contingent HP. loss at high speeds. PN.{Mr Northey} has already written in PM/DN2.12.25 to you in respect of the squeaking butterfly valve. Undoubtedly an improvement or cure for this squeak must be found for the existing owners of cars having this fitting. A suggestion has also been made by PH. to Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}, which it is hoped may assist in this. STEERING. We are quite satisfied that a definite improvement results from the use of the modified steering box, worm wheel and ratio of gears such as have been fitted to 108-MD, but we are no more forward in respect of the avoidance of steering wobbles; we are anxiously awaiting results of the continued investigations of this most important matter. SPRINGING HARD. We think that if our reply to this note is based upon statistics, the suggestion by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will be found to be inaccurate. GOVERNOR CONTROL SQUEAKING. We submit that the word "squeaking" should be sticking, and we are glad that this modification has effected a considerable improvement. P.N. | ||
