Re Patent Agents

With reference to this matter, I believe Messrs Phillipss are quite sound and reliable as regards their knowledge of patent law and the manner in which specifications should be prepared, but I am inclined to think that their technical knowledge of mechanisms and the particular problems connected with advanced motor car design is not very great.

I have come to this conclusion after my experience with them in connection with our many patent applications.

I have not had many cases in which they have not fully grasped the principles of the inventions, but errors have occured in one or two cases.

In order to reduce the amount of correspondence required and prevent as far as possible any misunderstanding, I have for some time adopted the course of preparing the draft specification for submission to Messrs Phillipss actually in the form of a patent application and have not merely supplied an ordinary technical description of the invention and a draft outline of the claims. This scheme was adopted partly with the idea of obtaining more experience in patent affairs and partly because it obviates to a large extent any chance of misunderstanding. This
