Engine cut-out issues and modifications for Defiant and Hurricane aircraft.

engine afterwards several plug leads were found to be loose. (This has since been confirmed by the R.R. Representative at Northolt.

He also went on to say that he or his second pilot had never experienced such a cut out as at Northolt. They had, however, had cutting out during dives and zooms which had been cured by the fitting of Pressure reducing valves and flame traps, but at the same time it had been arranged to try out the cooling duct for the fuel pump on the 5th. Defiant.

Group Capt. Dawson in reply, stated that, although these plug leads may have been loose, in view of the experience rapidly growing and as a result of the tests done at Hucknall and Derby on the Hurricane fuel system and temperatures in tight cowls, he was more than convinced that the Defiant "cut out" was primarily due to high temperature in the engine bay. As far as fitting the air duct on the 5th. aircraft was concerned, it could still go on of course but the tests must be carried out on the aircraft now at Northolt and not to wait for this 5th. aircraft.

Mr. Clarke stated that parts for this duct were already in hand and nearly completed, but no definite date was given when the aircraft would be handed to R.R.

Group Capt. Dawson then informed the Boulton Paul representatives of the steps that have been taken to overcome the exhaust glare to the pilots on Hurricane aircraft during night flying.

We were asked to send drawings of the "blinkers" as suggested for the Hurricane to Boulton Paul Ltd. for them to apply the principle on the Defiants.
