666a To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} C to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/APM. CHATEAUROUX. 1.8.39. 30.G.VII. SIDE SHAKE. We have completed a further series of tests on radiator movement. The harder rubber mounted transversely has made very little improvement. The movements which occur with this mounting by itself are as follows. 1) Pure side shake of whole unit relative to frame with no rotational movement. 2) Vertical shake due to bouncing on the rubber. 3) Oscillation about a point approximately 9" above the rubber mounting. The diagonal stays make the top of the radiator appear steady but produce harshness and shake of the scuttle which is very bad on rough roads. They do not help the vertical shake. We have also tried additional rubbers on either side of the central rubber but these will not give the results required. At present, without the diagonal stays, the radiator can rock about the axis of least resistance offered by the wings and the side strips. We think that if the mounting was a true pivot, such as a silentbloc, that the side strips and wings would have a better chance of resisting the movement. If, however, the radiator was still too free, we think that attention to the side strips would be more likely to give the results required than diagonal stays. We intend to experiment on these lines when the car is next held up. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux} J Waller.
