Dear Bill, Thank you for your letter in which you tell me how to get more miles per gallon. I will try the modifications to the carburetter first, as I think on pool petrol there would be a good deal of detonation if I was to advance the ignition. Yesterday I did a run to Harrogate and back of about 200 miles without any alterations, and the consumption was 17 miles to the gallon. Geoffrey claims to be doing 23 on his, but I find it a little difficult to believe. I have not been very successful with the Avon tyres. The back were quite smooth after 2,500, and the front, although they still had quite a lot of tread left, were showing signs of heel and toe wear.
