Report on Visit to U. S. A.{Mr Adams}

INTRODUCTION. Pp. 1-6.

This visit was made in reply to an invitation from S.A.E. to the S.B.A.C. to send representatives to attend meetings in Standardisation of Aero Engine and Aircraft Components.

U.S.A., Gt.Britain, Italy, and Canada were represented. France and Germany were not, although promises had been received.

SECTION I deals with Constitution, Organisation & Research in the S.A.E. Standards are apparently issued by Army and Navy as well as by S.A.E. and American Standards Association (A.S.A.), and may be issued merely by some Company drawing attention to a need for Standardisation and accepting responsibility for preparing necessary data sheets.

Here, 100% adoption of a recommendation is required, together with assurances that it will remain in use for a reasonable time, before it is accepted as a Standard.

In America the Aviation Industry's attitude is different. Complete adoption does not appear to be sought for it, neither is it regarded as final. Very often a Standard is no more than what we should term a Recommendation for current engineering practice, and they are evolved by experience in actual service.

The S.A.E. does not investigate or consider patents which may apply to the subject matter of proposed Standards. Accordingly, the Society recommends these intending to use standards, to make their own investigations and arrangements for avoiding liability for infringements.
