Dear Sirs,

We refer again to your letter of 25th & 28th ultimo. We regret that as, inconsequence of a misunderstanding between this Department and our chemists, the sample was in the first case tested by Belmont instrument instead of by Redwood as you require, and as, in the interval the writer has had occasion to go from home, for a few days, we regret that some delay has been occasioned in connection with our reply.

We have now, however, completed our examination of the oil and we have pleasure in handing you herewith a copy of our chemists report giving the various particulars which you specify.

Dealing seriatim with the various properties referred to we submit the following remarks :-
SPECIFIC GRAVITY is normal for oils of this class viz. the charcoal refined.
VISCOSITY. On account of their great consistency, the viscosities of these oils at low temperatures, say under 100°F.{Mr Friese} are not reliable. We place much more importance upon viscosities taken @ 120, 180 or 212°F.{Mr Friese}
FLASH POINT. We think that the flash point of Cylinder Oils of this class ought not to be less than 500 close. We observe that yours is rather lower than this but it is possible that the difference may be due perhaps to the use of a bottle which has been contaminated with Petrol or some other oil of low flash point.
EVAPORATION @ 370°F.{Mr Friese} The results shown by your sample are satisfactory.
ACIDITY, also satisfactory.
COMPOSITION. You will observe that your sample contains 5% of fatty matter which we regard as a valuable ingredient.

We are glad to learn that, despite the fact that Wilburine is recommended as superior to our "B" oil, your experience is that the latter oil gives better results on the test bench. As both oils are compound, although ours contains a high percentage of fatty matter than yours, and is moreover somewhat lower in viscosity, the results which you have obtained appear to be in harmony with the respective character of the oils.

We regret that we cannot give you a complete comparison of your sample and ours by Redwood's apparatus but we enclose a table in which you will find particulars of the viscosity taken by our Belmont viscosimeter (the parent of the Redwood apparatus) in which the results are, of course, strictly comparable.

Yours truly,
For PRICE'S PATENT CANDLE COMPANY LIMITED

Encl.
