To DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} C. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} " " EH. " " EFC. 10th Oct. 1918 SFP1/G1010181 X.3389. RE "CONDOR" REDUCTION GEAR I send you herewith drawing No. LeC.1008 shewing the planets for the .666 Reduction Gear having roll or bearings replaced by ball bearings. To replace these bearings the planet cages will only require a very slight modification in the nature of removing the face in the housing of the rear half of planet cage, so that the bearing will be free endways, the planet wheel being located at the other end. I have given on the drawing some comparison figures between the "Eagle" planet pinion ball bearing and the bearing on the "Condor", which will be noticed vary very little. The oil retainer shewn on this drawing is the one which should be used for this gear if standardised, but for the experimental test the one shewn on LeC.1004 could be used. I have made a slight modification to the propellor shaft flange which is cut away to clear the bearing retaining washer, so that this will now clear the inner race of the bearing. The above modification should be carried out on the gear already sent you. SFP. | ||
