- 2 - Alteration. A clutch-brake was fitted with rotating fabric as shown in the details herewith. With a 65 lb. spring this was too quick. With a 30 lb. spring this has now given good and consistent stopping of the clutch for slightly over 2000 miles, and it appears not to be affected by oil. We believe that further experience on a numbers of cars is necessary to establish definitely whether the rotation of the fabric is the benefit that we believe it to be. The wear of the clutch-brake fabric is found to be negligible in any combination so far tried. With box warm, engine warm and idling at 300 R.P.M. we find that a clutch brake for good traffic-handling should stop the clutch in about 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 seconds. Present clutch brakes with 30 lb. springs take about 4 to 5 seconds to stop under these conditions. Perhaps Mr. Hives would be good enough to tell us whether the larger clutch brake on the "lightened" clutch gives a marked improvement, and whether spiral oil grooves in the fabric have been tried, for disposing of the oil.
