Bailey - Chief Engineer} X5010 CRANKSHAFT TESTS. We have carried out a test on a 20 HP. std. crankshaft with the ends of the webs modified to reproduce the effect of Lec. 2430 as far as possible. We tested the stiffness of the shaft before and after the modification. The weight of the shaft before the modification was 28 lbs. 13 ozs., the weight after the modification was 26 lbs. 12 ozs. The total reduction in the stiffness of the shaft due to the modification was 3.65%. We consider, from our calculations, that the reduction in the polar moment of inertia of the shaft due to this weight removal will more than counterbalance the small fall in stiffness and that as a nett result the critical period of the shaft will be raised.
