4329 SECRET. To AHO. from HDY.{William Hardy} HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.18.1.35. c.c. Wer. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Du. Ey. SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox. Herewith is a print of N. Sch.4344 which shows a sleeve for the 3rd motion shaft with a thickened flange to be used in place of the sleeve which has fractured. We have increased the thickness of the sleeve slightly (by reducing the outside diameter of the splines for the top and 3rd gears) and have increased the corner radius. We ask for the best material we know of (S/ZNCR) and with these modifications we should say that the sleeve will be quite satisfactory for full power testing for say an hour or two, but if anything like a long test (10-20 hours) is contemplated we recommend that the flange solid with the shaft should be used as shown by N. Sch.4232 and N. Sch.4345. The latter drawing shows an increase to the flange thickness which the recent failure indicates. HDY.{William Hardy} N. Sch.4344 herewith. | ||
