To CJ. & R.{Sir Henry Royce} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} RG.{Mr Rowledge} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} S E C R E T K9770 E.A.C. 2 and 4. E1/M25.1.24. X. 9320 X. 9770 In reply to CJ27/E22.1.24, would you kindly note that we received letters and telegrams from Derby asking for the completion of EAC.2. to the old instructions as well as of EAC.4. and informing us that 132 sets of EAC. engine had been put in hand with the clutch modified to connect up to the standard 40/50 gearbox. As this did not altogether agree with the policy we had been instructed to follow we reported the matter (E1/M31.12.23.) to CJ. at the same time giving a list of dates when both EAC.2. and EAC.4. could be completed. As the work stands EAC.2. instructions have all been completed except for one item, (e.g. modification to RR switchbox - also required on EAC.1V.) and fortunately the work done on both the frame and the engine sections very largely applies to EAC.1V. and hence very little time has been used up on EAC.2. POSITION OF E.A.C.4. GEARBOX. The progress of the new four speed box has not been impeded in any way by EAC.2. Mr. Stent has been practically continuously employed on the former since Mr. Royce left WW. and the designs have now matured up to the point where the major portion of the box can be sent to Mr. Royce for inspection. As regards apportioning the design the work could be sub-divided as follows :- (1) Gearbox itself comprising gear wheels, shafts, change speed mechanism, and casing. (2) Servo motor and speedometer drive. (3) Clutch withdrawing mechanism and casing between engine and gearbox. (4) Change speed lever and gate. Mr. Stent is just completing item (1) and expects to have 5 drawings ready for Mr. Royce this week-end shewing change wheels, shafts, sliders, interlock, and general scheme and details of reverse gear and reverse change mechanism. Item (2) servo motor is already in an advanced state and Mr. Stent expects to be at work on this at the beginning of next week. contd:- | ||
