1020. To Mr. Wheeler (Foundry) c. to Mr. Hall (Laboratory) Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}8/JH.5.11.38. A.C.9. Alloy. With reference to the supplying of outside firms with A.C. 9 bearings. As you know, Messrs. Wellworthy of Lymington are dealing with this job commercially, but they are being supplied with material in ingot form from Messrs. High Duty Alloys of Slough. Ever since this job started, the latter firm have been in difficulty, not only on the question of working to specification but also in analysing it. We have seen instances where H.D.A. have been prooved wrong, stating an error of as much as 50% on the copper content. By this we mean that they have been this amount in error somewhere in their method of analysis, because after taking drilling from the same bearing that they had analysed, both Wellworthy and an independant firm agreed in analysis, and thus found H.D.A's. figures to be wrong. It is intended that a Foundry man and a chemist should visit our plant from H.D.A. and a representative from Wellworthy to be present. The idea being, that we can produce A.C.9. without trouble, and therefore these other people obviously have something to learn. We have corresponded with both firms accordingly, and have made it plain that they should make as much use of this visit to our plant as possible. The result of this meeting should be, that they are able to line up their own methods against ours. | ||
