Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/LG27.4.28. LOADING OF REAR SHOCK ABSORBERS. X235 With reference to Na{Mr Nadin}1/B41328. The standard loadings which we are now using and which we find satisfactory for our conditions are 70 lbs. up and 80 lbs. down. We do not think we should be able to use these with a normal friction shock absorber but we have proved that the hydraulics give a cushion effect. Actually for American conditions you may find this loading too high, as all the American cars we have so far tried have very flabby suspension, from which we deduce that speeds above 50 m.p.h. are seldom attained; actually, Mr. Royce wishes us to increase the damping still further and we are carrying out tests to see if this is practicable.
