87960 To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}11/KT.30.10.31. RE. 58-GN. With reference to Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}16/E26.10.31. we are sorry to hear that the noise from the neighbourhood of the rear axle has commenced again. When the car was in Derby we formed the impression that it was the pinion thrust race that was causing the noise. The rear axle was dismantled and examined and the pinion thrust race found to be running out of track slightly and in addition some of the balls were slightly pitted; a new thrust race was fitted, and we were satisfied that the axle was O.K. Because we heard no noise from it afterwards we presumed it was cured. If the car goes to N. we would suggest that the universal joint at the rear end of the propeller shaft is dismantled and examined, it may be possible that the noise comes from there; this part was not touched in Derby.
