x6074 328 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from HDY.{William Hardy} HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.25.6.34. c. Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Ds. HHJ. GRY{Shadwell Grylls} SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox. ------------------ Will you kindly modify the front end cover of this gearbox to give increased area of the surface which takes the end thrust as indicated on N. Sch.4107 herewith. This drawing is for the J.3. box but it serves to shew what is required. Nothing need be done to the J.3. box as it is unlikely that any more will be made. There has been a failure of one of the 3rd speed gear floating bushes on the Vulture, the flange having broken away from the bush at the undercut, and we accordingly suggest that the third speed bushes for the SpectreCodename for Phantom III be instructed without undercuts. Alternatively a single floating bush, the same length as the gear, and without flanges may be used, bronze washers taking the place of the flanges. Will you kindly instruct the 1st speed and reverse gears and the 3rd motion shaft to be made of S/ZNCR. In the case of the gears surface hardness is equally as important as core strength.
