contd :- -2- The selectivity was not so good as when the car was first taken over, when driving over bad cambered roads. The steering remained in this condition for 5000 miles under all conditions of driving and at no time was there any sign of its being uncontrolable. We fitted an extra distance washer in the cross steering tube at this stage as the friction load had decreased to 5 lbs. Nothing further was done to the steering. The car was then driven another 2000 miles with no trouble whatsoever. On leaving Chateauroux for Boulogne I drove the car to Paris reaching a speed of 90 m.p.h. on a flat stretch of road. The rest of the a journey being at 70 to 80 m.p.h. The steering was in no way interferred with whilst at Paris. The jobs done then were - Gearbox undershield fitted, front brakes relined with ferodo, and several repairs to bonnet and bodywork. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Butler drove the car from Paris to Boulogne and no comment was made about the steering. We have driven cars in France 50,000 miles with all conditions of steerings - we have had light springs in the side steering tubes and heavy ones, severe road shocks, and wobbles, but we have never experienced a steering that was not controlable, furthermore we have never experienced a car going into a skid from any steering troubles. We have only experienced rear wheel skid at high speed when striking a treacherous surface, or quick braking. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} | ||
