L. Edwards}/Auto 13th December, 1934. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives, Esq., Messrs. Rolls Royce, Ltd., Derby. Dear Sir, The University, Birmingham - Cold Starting Tests. This investigation was planned by the Vacuum Oil Company Limited and observed independently by the University of Birmingham Electrical Engineering Department, who are responsible only for the official report, of which a copy is attached. The tests referred to were carried out on a complete Standard 16 h.p. 6-cylinder car, supplied by courtesy of the Standard Motor Co. Ltd. Tests were previously conducted on the same engine at the National Physical Laboratory and are referred to in the copy of "Evidence" enclosed on pages 28, 29 and 30. Endurance tests initially carried out on the same engine are also referred to in "Evidence" on pages 19, 20 and 21. We believe that the results obtained, insofar that they represent practical operating conditions, will be of interest to you, as the report reveals some interesting comparative data (see Table No.2.). Table No.1. shows the running log of the car before freezing down. Table No.2. shows the cold room log of electrical tests where it will be noted there is a marked drop in battery volts under load with a further drop at the starter motor, the difference between these figures representing copper losses.
