May 12th. 1915. Report on bumping test of Radiator with rough experimental method of support. For this test we used one of the old experimental sloping shoulder crinkled tube radiators. It was fitted up as shown in sketch by fixing to the bottom tank a pair of flanges with central projecting studs by means of which the radiator was held down on to a channel section cross member which was in turn bolted to the under side of the top flange of the chassis side members. It was bumped on 2" alternate bumps at 105 revs per minute and after running for 14 hours 10 minutes a leak appeared in the tubes 1 5/8" from the off side and 1/4" from the bottom, also a second leak occured 2 1/2" from the near side and 6 1/4" from the bottom. We ran on until 20 hours was completed and another leak developed 7 1/2" from the near side and 1 5/8" from the bottom. This is an improvement on other methods of suspension we have previously tried with the crinkled tube radiator, the times of which can be found on the attached sheet. | ||
